Barn stars, originating in the 1830s, were used by German-American farmers as symbols of protection and prosperity. Each color has a different meaning, like green for fertile crops and blue for safety. Though rooted in agricultural life, barn stars and hex signs became cultural symbols. Similar protective symbols, like the Om or Eye of Horus, appear across cultures worldwide.
