Inside a ‘Dystopian’ Apartment Block Where That Houses Over 20,000 Residence.
A viral TikTok video recently showcased a massive building in China called the “Dystopian Apartment,” which can house up to 30,000 residents. The video, shared by @fatheristheone, featured stunning drone footage of the Regent International apartment complex in Hangzhou, designed by Alicia Loo. Completed in 2013, the 675-foot-tall building has 36-39 floors and is one of the most densely populated residential buildings in the world.
The building functions like a self-contained city, with amenities like restaurants, pools, grocery stores, and internet cafes. It’s home to young professionals, students, and influencers, attracted by its convenience and affordable rent (ranging from $200 to $600 per month).
While some may find the “dystopian” label unsettling, others praise its sustainable design and see it as a solution to housing shortages. A similar model exists in Whittier, Alaska, where all residents live in a single 14-story building.
