GOP Set to Add Another Seat to House In State Redistricting Effort

Republican-led legislatures in multiple states are advancing new congressional maps aimed at expanding GOP representation, with former President Donald Trump encouraging the efforts. In North Carolina, a proposed map could give Republicans 11 of 14 districts, targeting Democratic Rep. Don Davis’s seat. The plan passed the state Senate despite Democratic opposition, and Governor Josh Stein cannot veto redistricting measures under state law.
Supporters say the maps reflect voter preferences, while critics call them partisan gerrymanders. Similar efforts are underway in Texas, Missouri, Kansas, and Indiana, facing legal challenges and activist pushback. Meanwhile, California Democrats, led by Governor Gavin Newsom, are exploring measures to create five new Democrat-leaning districts, countering GOP initiatives.
Currently, Republicans control both the governorship and legislature in 23 states, giving them a significant advantage in shaping congressional representation ahead of upcoming elections.
