Scientists Explore a Possible Connection Between Oral Health and Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s, the UK’s leading cause of dementia, is linked to age, genetics, depression, and heart health—but new research suggests infections may also play a role. A 2019 study found the gum disease bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis in Alzheimer’s patients’ brains, and experiments in mice showed it can trigger beta-amyloid buildup, hinting that microbes might contribute to the disease.
