Alain was born on November 8, 1935, in a Paris suburb. His parents separated when he was three, and he grew up between two families with little attention, often cared for by a nanny. A troubled student, he was expelled from several schools and later trained briefly as a butcher before working in a store. His time in the Army helped shape his character, and after service, he returned to civilian life as a waiter.
