Firefighter suffers third-degree burns – this is him 7 years later

Patrick Hardison, a volunteer firefighter from Mississippi, suffered devastating third-degree burns to his face, scalp, and upper body in a 2001 house fire while trying to rescue a woman. His injuries were so severe that for years he wore a baseball cap, sunglasses, and prosthetic ears in public, and children would often run away in fear. After 71 surgeries and struggling with pain, limited facial movement, and social isolation, Patrick’s life changed dramatically in 2015 when he underwent the most extensive face transplant ever performed—a 26-hour surgery involving over 100 medical professionals. The transplant, which carried a 50/50 survival chance, gave him a new face, scalp, ears, eyelids, and nose, restoring his ability to blink and express himself. The donor was David Rodebaugh, a young man who had passed away from a brain injury, whose family generously donated his face. Today, Patrick lives with his family, advocates hope for others with severe injuries, and continues to inspire with his story of resilience and renewal.
