A powerful act of respect caught the nation’s attention when a photo of a U.S. soldier standing at attention in the pouring rain during a funeral procession went viral. Captured on July 6, 2017, by Erin Hester in Vine Grove, Kentucky, the image shows the soldier, later identified as Col. Jack L. Usrey of the Tennessee Army National Guard, saluting as the procession passed by — despite having no personal connection to the deceased.
Hester shared the moment on social media, writing, “This gentleman went above and beyond,” praising his show of respect. The photo sparked widespread admiration for Col. Usrey, who humbly credited his parents for instilling in him the values of dignity and respect.
“I’m humbled and surprised at the reaction to such a simple gesture,” Usrey said. “I was hoping my small action would let them know we care.”
