First American Pope Criticized Trump & Vance In Tweets — Now Leading The Church

In a historic move, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago-born former missionary and Peruvian citizen, has been elected the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. Prevost is the first American to hold the papacy, a surprising development given the Vatican’s historical reluctance toward American leadership.

Known for his progressive views, Leo XIV has openly criticized the Trump administration’s immigration policies, supporting DACA recipients and denouncing the separation of migrant families. He also opposed statements by JD Vance, challenging his interpretation of Christian values.

Prevost’s background as an Augustinian leader and archbishop in Peru, coupled with his reformist stance, made him a popular figure among cardinals, particularly those from the Americas. During his first public address, he spoke in both Spanish and Italian, emphasizing peace, communication, and evangelization.

Despite his past criticisms, former President Trump and Vice President JD Vance congratulated him, signaling a positive relationship moving forward. Pope Leo XIV is expected to continue the reform-minded direction of his predecessor, Pope Francis.
