1000 year old castle toilet!!

A 1,000-year-old castle toilet sounds fascinating! Castles from the medieval era had some pretty unique and often surprising features, especially when it came to sanitation.
In these castles, toilets were often just holes in the stone or wooden seats that led to a chute or a pit outside the castle walls. Some castles even had “garderobes,” which were small rooms where people would sit over a stone hole. The waste would drop directly into the moat or a cesspit below.

They were often quite basic and far from the modern conveniences we have today, but they were practical for the time. Castles were built for defense, so the placement of toilets often took into consideration both privacy and keeping waste away from the living areas.

Have you seen one of these ancient toilets before, or are you curious about how they worked?
