Deli Owner Puts Up ‘Offensive’ Sign In Store Window, Gets Forced Out Of Business
In 2015, Jim Boggess, a deli owner in Flemington, put up a sign that read, “CELEBRATE YOUR WHITE HERITAGE IN MARCH, WHITE HISTORY MONTH,” hoping to celebrate his heritage. However, the sign sparked backlash, especially from customer Bhakti Curtis, who found it offensive, accusing Boggess of mocking Black History Month and using KKK-style symbolism. Although the police did not find it racist, the controversy hurt Boggess’ business, leading to a decline in customers. A month later, he was forced to close the deli. Seeking help, he started a GoFundMe campaign, explaining he only wanted to celebrate his heritage, but ultimately, he lost his business and his American dream.
