This Historic Photo Has Never Been Edited – Take A Closer Look Down And Try Not To Cry When You Learn The Eerie Truth Behind
A recent photo of the Twin Towers with a beach in the foreground sparked memories of New York City’s forgotten oasis. Near Battery Park, where the Twin Towers once stood, a temporary beach formed during the 1970s construction delays. Although not meant for public use, locals adopted it as a peaceful retreat, sunbathing and playing volleyball under the Towers’ shadow. Known as Battery Park Beach, it became a quiet haven in the heart of the city.
In 1979, the beach also hosted the largest anti-nuclear rally in history, with 200,000 people gathering for a pro-solar demonstration. Artists and activists made the space vibrant, with installations like Nancy Rubins’ towering sculpture made of discarded objects. The beach became a unique cultural venue before being transformed in the 1980s.
