Child star Mara Wilson, 37, left Hollywood after ‘Matilda’ as she was ‘not cute anymore’
In the early 1990s, Mara Wilson became a beloved child star with roles in Mrs. Doubtfire and Miracle on 34th Street. Known for her charm and wit, she seemed destined for Hollywood success. However, by her teens, Mara stepped away from acting, citing the industry’s focus on appearances and how it made her feel worthless as she grew older.
Mara’s breakout came in 1993 with Mrs. Doubtfire at age five. She followed with Miracle on 34th Street and Matilda, her biggest role in 1996. However, the death of her mother that same year deeply affected her. As she grew, the pressures of fame made her increasingly unhappy, and by 11, she began turning down roles. Her final major film was Thomas and the Magic Railroad in 2000, which she found too juvenile.
Now 37, Mara reflects on her time in Hollywood and the struggles of being a child star.
